Tajikistan joined World Trade Organization
On December 10, 2012 an important, historic event occurred in political and economic life of the independent Tajikistan. The Republic of Tajikistan has officially been admitted to the membership of the World Trade Organization at the session of the WTO General Council held in Geneva of Swiss Confederation.
Official delegation of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan headed by the President of the country Emomali Rahmon took part in the meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting the WTO General Council, referring to the adoption of three important documents – draft protocol on accession of the Republic of Tajikistan to the World Trade Organization, decision of the Council on the accession to the WTO and the report of the working group on accession of Tajikistan to the mentioned organization, congratulated Tajikistan on this remarkable and joyful event.
The President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon spoke at the meeting of the WTO General Council and called the date of accession of the Republic of Tajikistan to the World Trade Organization in the newest history of independent Tajikistan among the important events favorable to further sustainable economic and social development of the country.
The Head of State, availing an opportunity, expressed his sincere gratitude to friends and economic cooperation partners of Tajikistan, which were together with the Republic of Tajikistan in this long and complex process of accession to the World Trade Organization, as well as profoundly thanked the Secretariat of WTO under the leadership of its Director General Pascal Lamy for their consistent support.
The President of Tajikistan also expressed the gratitude of Tajik people to donor countries and international organizations for their unbiased financial and technical support.
The Head of State expressed interest in the enhancement of cooperation with the World Trade Organization and its member states and noted with confidence that: “Tajikistan will use its membership as an instrument of ensuring further economic development and bright future of its people”.
Then, the WTO Director General Pascal Lamy expressed satisfaction over the accession of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Organization, as well as added that the Government of Tajikistan has created a necessary organizational basis for arrangement of works to ensure the membership of Tajikistan in this authoritative organization.
At the end of the WTO General Council Session, the ceremony of signing of the Protocol on accession of the Republic of Tajikistan to the World Trade Organization by the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and WTO Director General Pascal Lamy has been held.
